What sound system is needed for an outdoor concert?

The sound system for an outdoor concert is a complete system that includes much more than two sets placed on the sides of the stage. Depending on the size of the event and the requirements of the artists, a main PA system, subwoofers, front fills, out fills, delay lines, FOH and monitor consoles, microphones, wireless systems, stage boxes, stage monitoring, cabling, signal distribution, and appropriately prepared power may be needed. The scope of the system should result from the bands' riders, the size and geometry of the area, the number of participants, and the concert program. Below, we explain what elements make up a complete outdoor sound system and what the organizer should expect from the technical company.

How to choose sound equipment based on the number of participants and the type of event?
Choosing sound equipment based on the number of participants makes sense only as a first point of reference. The mere information that the event is prepared for 100, 500, or 1000 people does not yet indicate how large a PA system will be needed. Two events for the same number of guests may require completely different configurations due to the area, audience geometry, acoustics, distances from the stage, and type of program. A system is designed differently for a conference, differently for a band concert, a corporate gala, or an event with a DJ. In this article, we explain how the number of participants relates to actual technical requirements, when additional sound zones are needed, and what information the producer should receive before selecting the system.
